Probate Courts Expand ADA Resources

The Probate Courts have expanded and coordinated the resources available to court users under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), streamlining the process for requesting accommodations to access the courts’ facilities, proceedings and materials.
Each Probate Court now has its own ADA contact, a court employee designated to answer questions about access and handle requests for accommodations. The accommodations may include providing equipment and services such as assistive listening devices, sign language interpreters and printed material in alternative formats.
“The Probate Courts are always looking for ways to make access to the courts and participation in proceedings as smooth as possible for individuals with mental and physical challenges,” said Probate Court Administrator Paul J. Knierim. “By expanding and coordinating ADA resources, the courts have simplified the process for seeking an accommodation, which advances our commitment to providing full and equal access to justice for all who use the Probate Courts.”
The list of ADA contacts for each Probate Court, along with accommodation request forms, procedures for requesting an accommodation, informational pamphlets and other materials, can be found at ctprobate.gov.
The ADA, a federal civil rights law enacted in 1990, requires that people with disabilities have equal access to public accommodations and transportation, jobs and government services, among other things.
